Who We Are and What We Are About
Food Works caters weddings, private parties, receptions, seminars, conferences, office parties, brunches in Bloomington, Indiana and the surrounding areas. We are not your everyday catering business, however. Food Works is a program that was developed by Middle Way House, and is currently managed by Bloomingfoods.
Financial independence is central to women’s safety. Without it, many women will remain in, or return to abusive relationships. With this in mind, Food Works was started as an economic development program of the Middle Way House in 2002. Bloomingfoods took over management of the program in 2011.
Food Works is working to provide opportunities to women who are victims of domestic violence to become economically self-sufficient while providing real culinary skills, a safe and supportive work environment, and a valuable work history to present to future employers. A portion of the proceeds earned by Food Works go to Middle Way House and every person who engages Food Works for catering is offered the opportunity to pay a 15% service charge in lieu of a gratuity, which is then provided as a contribution to Middle Way House.
Another mission is to provide meals that are healthy, tasty and varied, and low in sodium sugar and fats. The food is prepared “from scratch” whenever possible. Our meals emphasize fresh fruits and vegetables and fiber. We currently provide meals for the Head Start program and for Project School. We bake fresh bread and muffins for these meals and provide a meal plan with an emphasis on good nutrition.
It is our goal to work not only with the women who enter our programs, but to be positively involved with our community in building a positive environment for all families. Our approach to achieving this goal has been to reach out to other organizations to work together on providing avenues for healthy locally grown food to enter local markets. The Food Works Kitchen is providing low cost rental time to those starting small specialty food product businesses. We share our kitchen with Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard for various community classes. We are working on developing providing products for sell on local store shelves.
Our meals are of the highest quality, and we are happy to provide you with references from many happy customers. We are thankful to have a supporting community as our home.
